Creating a Fun Itinerary

An essential part of planning a dog-friendly staycation is designing an itinerary that incorporates activities you can enjoy together. Here are some ideas:

  • Local Walks and Parks: We have miles of countryside from our Retreats for you to explore. Use Footpathmap.co.uk for a free resource wherever you are in the UK. If you need a secure field to let your pooch run free, we have a few within a short drive from us: Grow Walkies in Buntingford; Barkway Dog Park a 10 minute drive away and Pheobes Place in Hitchin.

  • Dog-Friendly Beaches: The nearest beach to us is 1.5 hour drive away. The Suffolk coast is wonderful for dogs. We recommend Felixstowe or the lovely Aldeburgh. The Essex coast is also an hour and a half drive: Walton on The Naze is lovely, as is Frinton on Sea.

  • Dining: We are surrounded by dog friendly eateries. Walkable dog friendly pubs include The Jolly Wagonner Ardley; The Sword Inn Hand Westmill and The Fox Aspenden and The Falcon in Buntingford.

Preparing Your Dog for their Dog Friendly Stay

Here’s how you can ensure they have a smooth trip for your dog-friendly stays:

  • Pack Essentials: Make a checklist of items your dog needs, including food, leads, bedding, toys, and hygiene products. Having their belongings can help them feel secure in a new environment.

  • Comfort Items: Bring a blanket or toy that smells like home. Familiar scents can soothe your dog in unfamiliar surroundings.

  • Health and Safety: Ensure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/tick treatments. Have a first-aid kit handy for emergencies.

  • Our Doggie Welcome Pack: We provide throws to place on the sofa and bed; towels for drying off after a wet or muddy walk; an outdoor hot dog shower/boot wash. We provide bowls, a welcome treat from The Canine Menu, dog shampoo and fabric freshener.

Embrace Relaxation Time

A staycation doesn't need to be a whirlwind of activities. Balance your adventuring with moments of relaxation. Consider the following:

  • Quiet Time: Set aside some hours to relax. Not only will this recharge you, but it will also give your dog time to rest and recuperate.

  • Cuddling on the Couch: Use this time to cuddle or give belly rubs, ensuring your dog feels loved and secure during your staycation.

Down Time: As our retreats are securely fenced, this allows you to relax in the Outdoor Bath, whilst your pooch stays safely in your retreat. They can relax on the outdoor sofa, or wander around the garden.
